One-sided vs Two-sided

DSE Argumentative Essay

One-sided Argumentative Essay(一面倒型)

(I firmly believe / I am convinced that)

Do you agree? / Do you support? / What is your opinion?

Two-sided Argumentative Essay(正反論證型)

Discuss both views and give your opinion / To what extent do you agree? / Is it a positive or negative development?

Argumentative Essay

Introduction:

In recent years, the debate over whether schools should ban smartphones has sparked heated discussion. While some argue that smartphones are a distraction, I firmly believe that an outright ban is neither necessary nor beneficial for students’ learning.

Body Paragraphs:

  • E — Example(例子):用具體例子支撐

One-sided Body 範例

Topic Sentence:First of all, banning smartphones would deprive students of valuable learning tools.

Reason:Many educational apps and online resources have become essential for modern learning, allowing students to access information instantly and collaborate on projects.

Impact:Without smartphones, students would lose access to these resources during school hours, potentially hindering their academic progress.

Compare:In fact, studies have shown that schools which integrate technology into classrooms tend to have higher engagement rates than those that restrict it entirely.

Example:For instance, my school introduced a guided smartphone usage policy last year, and the number of students using educational apps during breaks increased by 40%.

Two-sided Body(讓步 + 反駁)

Admittedly, / It is true that / Opponents may argue that…
Nevertheless, / However, / This argument fails to consider that…
With proper guidance, / With sufficient education, / Provided that…
Therefore, it is clear that…

範例:

Admittedly, opponents may contend that smartphones are a major source of distraction in classrooms.

Nevertheless, this argument fails to consider that the root cause of distraction lies not in the device itself but in a lack of self-discipline among students.

補償:With proper guidance from teachers and a clear code of conduct, students can learn to use smartphones responsibly rather than being deprived of them entirely.

Hence, a blanket ban would do more harm than good to students’ development.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, while the concerns about smartphone distraction are understandable, an outright ban is a short-sighted solution. Not only would it deprive students of valuable learning resources, but it would also fail to address the underlying issue of self-discipline. A balanced approach that combines guided usage with digital literacy education is far more effective. After all, the goal of education is not to shield students from distractions but to equip them with the skills to manage them.

  5. Language 太口語 — Argumentative Essay 要用正式語氣,避免 “I think”、”In my opinion” 呢啲弱句式
